The Filipinos have certainly found a friend in Malcolm Conlan, the founder of FIL EVENT. Conlan is a British native but has grown to love the Philippines, its food and of course, the Filipino people that’s why it wouldn’t be a surprise when he was there to the rescue when Jordanian actress, Mais Hamdan ridiculed OFWs in an entertainment show in the Middle East.

The actress apologized for her malicious remarks against Filipinos working abroad when she was bashed by thousand irritated OFWs and Conlan was also quick to add his opinion on the matter. He said that OFWs are doing great sacrifices leaving their families behind especially their children to work for little amount of money (Php6,000.00-9,000.00 for blue collar jobs) and working for long hours.

He also added that it’s such a sad truth that these OFWs come home to their children who barely remember them since they have been working abroad for a long time. Many of them even suffer abuse from their employers.

Conlan stated that the Middle East would be lost if not for Filipino workers.

"Without Filipinos, the Middle East would be in great crisis," he said.

"Try leaving your children to be cared for by relatives, 4,500 Miles away for year upon year, ending up earning very little and being treated as a slave, only to find when you finally go back home, your children don’t remember you!!!" he added.

Conlan appeared in a 30 minute video where he specified his frustration about the actress poking fun at OFWs in the show that was aired years before. He also said that there are ways to entertain viewers without having to touch the topic of racism. Conlan may be a British but he has a Filipino family so this case is a little personal to him. He’s hopeful that someday, if Filipinos work abroad, it’s because they choose to do that and not because they were forced to.

Conlan was also a bit adamant about Hamdan’s apology questioning the motive behind it since the actress said she was sorry after she was bashed on social media. It’s hard not think that she only did that so her career won’t get affected.

“Did she apologize because she generally meant it or did she apologize because she knew that it would affect her career or she knows Filipino would be angry with her, is that the reason why she apologized?”  he said.

And if she makes fun of Filipinos, what she’s doing in her own house, did she have Filipino workers? Is she making a joke out of them? you know these are the questions that we need to be asking,” he implied.
