The first ever highway in the Philippines to have a 3-meter wide lane for bikers and joggers has been complete by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH.) The Laguna Lake Highway in Taguig or what more commonly know as Circumferential 6 or C6 was extended and paved, adding 1.3 kilometers to the whole highway, making it to a total of 4.5 kilometers now.
During the opening ceremony, DPWH Secretary Mark Villar and Transportation Secretary Art Tugade were joined by BCDA President Vince Dizon, Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano and Taguig Representative Pia Cayetano, who also tried the bike lane.
"In a study by World Health Organization, 19% of those who die in road accidents in the Philippines are pedestrians."
Villar also added that because of that, it is important that we pit in place more pedestrian infrastructures. He also noted that this is not only going to happen in Luzon, but also in Visayas and in Mindanao.
"In building the road network in the Philippines, it is important that we also put in place more pedestrian infrastructure. This will not only happen in Luzon but also in Visayas and Mindanao."
The improved highway is created to ensure that the pedestrians, bikers and residents will be safe from the motorists, as well as from the backflow of lakewater.
There is an ongoing Phase III project that will add an additional 4.3 kilometers to the said highway and is expected to be finished on August 2018.
