Yesterday, the Bureau of Customs (BoC) initiated the condemnation of P61.6 million worth of 20 luxury cars under the order of President Rodrigo Duterte. The destruction of the smuggled vehicles are meant to teach the car enthusiasts who refuse to pay the right tax a lesson.
However, in the previous video where the vehicles were shown, netizens noticed that other seized cars such as Lamborghini, McLaren, and Ferrari were not included in the cars that was destroyed.
As such, PCOO Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson interviewed BoC Commissioner Isidro Lapeña to ask where these luxury cars are.
Lapeña responded that those vehicles are still under litigation. He explained that there is a process once a smuggled car is discovered, noting that the process is to determine whether a seizure or detention can be warranted.
"Once it is discovered that it is undervalued, it goes through a process to determine whether the warrant of seizure or detention can be issued. Once we have that, we will go to the process of determining the disposal mode," said Lapeña.
The disposal mode that he is saying is the mode where in the smuggled car can either be auctioned, donated, or destroyed.
President Duterte earlier announced that he would no longer allow the auction of the smuggled luxury vehicles as this was taken advantage of. Instead he wants all of them be destroyed as part of his crackdown on unscrupulous vehicle importers.
"Pwede sanang i-auction yan as a mode of disposal, but the President decided to have this destruction at ang purpose niyan para hindi na mapakinabangan ulit ng mga smugglers kasi napupunta rin yan sa kanila..," Lapeña further said.
