For the last few days, we have witnessed how Mayon Volcano
started to make noise. According to the people living there, there were just
banging noises in the volcano and that ashfall began to fall.
During the early days, it was not believed that it will
erupt, but nevertheless, evacuation progress were done and the people living near
the vicinity were asked to evacuate their homes.
In the latest update, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology
and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) warned people that Mayon Volcano may erupt in the
coming days or weeks.
Glowing red lava has started flowing on top of Mayon Volcano
starting Monday night, January 15.
PHIVOLCS head Renato Solidum spoke about the lave that is
flowing out of the volcano.
“The pyroclastic flows, there were several, were not generated by an explosion from the crater with lava, molten rocks and steam, shooting up the volcano then rolling down."
“These were generated by lava fragments breaking off from the lava flow in the upper slopes.”
Around the vicinity of Mayon Volcano, around 15,000 people
lives within the 6-7 kilometer radius that is considered a danger zone.
As of Tuesday, January 16, a total of 5,318 families or
21,823 individuals have been affected in 25 barangays in the towns of Camalig,
Guinobatan, Ligao City, Daraga, Tabaco City, and Malilipot in Albay and were
staying in 18 evacuation centers, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and
Management Council (NDRRMC).
Residents were adviced not to go near the danger zone.
